Cervical Health and HPV

| Learn | Prevent | Screen |

Human Papillomavirus, HPV, is a virus. Like all viruses, HPV causes infection by entering the cells. HPV infection is a slow process. HPV can cause genital warts. HPV causes changes in the cell that can lead to cancer over time, including cancer of the cervix. The HPV vaccine is a safe and effective way to prevent yourself against HPV related diseases, including cervical cancer.

The ideal age for the HPV vaccination of girls and boys is 11 or 12 but anyone can get the vaccine between the ages of 9-26. If you are older than 26 and have not been vaccinated, or are at risk for a new HPV infection, talk to your provider about whether you need an HPV vaccination.
